Preparations for Christmas are framing well in the Hungarian capital. One of the sharp evidences of that is the opening of the traditional Christmas fair on the square of Vörösmarty in the heart of Budapest.
Annually this fair contracts thousands of foreign tourists which can get souvenirs and gifts of exclusive manual artwork here. The quality of national master's items will be monitored by the special jury.
Besides it is also possible to try gastronomic dishes, including hot wine and traditional Hungarian sausages at the fair. There are also different exhibitions and more than 150 special programs – performances of musical collectives, folk dance ensembles and puppet theaters (on weekdays from 15.00, and on days off from 11.00 am) for the visitors of the fair. And from December, 2nd till December, 10th Santa Claus will be walking around the fair and accepting children's wishes.
The other sight of the square of Vörösmarty is the legendary coffee house "Jerbo"; the windows of this cafe turn into one huge Christmas calendar since December, 1st. Every day one of such windows opens slightly and this is a fascinating show for children.
This year authorities of the city have prepared a rich cultural program including 150 various actions which will take place on the square. There are theatrical performances, concerts of national and classical music among them. Half a million of guests are expected on the fair in the forthcoming days.
Beside, central streets of Budapest are decorated with festive lighting these days, according to the example of other European cities. However, preparations will not be limited to these measures; the expectation of this holiday will be associated with some records. So, on Koshuta Square in front of the building of the Hungarian parliament they will place the world's largest Christmas calendar in the form of a huge light board.
Beside, in the same place on December, 16th the Hungarian confectioners intend to make the longest Christmas Swiss roll in order to be stated in the Guinness Book of World Records.
Christmas is one of the most respected holidays in Hungary; the majority of people have begon preparation for it in good time. These pre-holiday days trade workers have the greatest load. Trade workers have their reasons to set big hopes on pre-Christmas trade, in fact, the majority of trade enterprises receive 1/4 of their annual income during last two months.
According to the statistical data from mass-media, citizens of Hungary do not think about difficulties, which will expect them in the future year yet. They spend much more money, than in the past year for festive gifts. According to the Republican Trading Union the expected retail circulation for December will be 700 billion Forints, that is 25 billions more than in the last year.
This winter in Hungary they organize the advertising program "Budapest Winter Invasion". It will allow tourists to get significant discounts for their rest in the Hungarian capital. The program includes the special prices of hotels and Hungary's national airline carrier Malev that offers discount flights and 45 hotels from 3 star hotels to 5 star hotels.
Beside, "Invasion" will allow you to get two two-day transport cards of Budapest at the price of one three-day (72 hours). The card, coupled unlimited using of urban transport, includes more than 100 different privileges; visiting of 60 museums free-of-charge or at a discount, discounts in restaurants and health centers and even car rental at a discount price are among these privileges.
Budapest Winter Invasion will last till March, 31st 2007; however, the discounts according to this program will not be given for the days of Christmas and New Year's holidays.
