As the capital of New South Wales, Australia, Sydney has plenty of the major attractions in the country, which include the Sydney Opera House, the Harbor Bridge, miles of open beach, and the annual Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras. In addition, getting out of the urban area– which is bordered by the Pacific Ocean to the east and the Blue Mountains on the opposite side– can provide several thrilling outdoor adventures.
Sydney’s gay and lesbian scene is located near Oxford Street in Darlinghorst and King Street in Newton. All of Sydney is gay-friendly, laidback, and welcoming. The Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras is acclaimed around the world as providing a great time for all, but also an important political and civil rights event. The Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras runs through late February / early March sponsoring various fun activities in and around the city and finishes with aa huge parade which, at the end, becomes a post-parade dance party which carries on until the next morning.
Some of Sydney’s other main festival attractions include the Sydney Film Festival, World Environment Day, and Big Day Out, a rock musical festival that travels through Australia. Sydney is home to some fantastic outdoor sites – national parks, botanical gardens, and sunny beaches – including the popular Bondi Beach (and the even more popular Bondi Beach Lifeguards). Bondi Beach holds its own series of festivals and events, including the annual Sculpture by the Sea Contest and the weekly Bondi Beach Market.
If you decide you’re ready for indoor entertainment, Sydney offers plenty to keep you entertained. You might want to secure tickets to the Sydney Theater Company or the evenly descripting Sydney Dance Company. Both are know worldwide for their exceptionalally talented artists.
Want to escape for a day from Sydney? The Blue Mountains offer a relaxing and energizing change from the busy city. There you can visit some of Australia’s small towns, historic villas or even spend your time nosing around some of the lime stone caves. You might want to end your day trip by taking a special ride on the Scenic Railway.
Do not overlook Sydney!
